'Running Out of Things to Say' McQueen
(Furry Tongue)

Not to be confused with the American band by the same name; McQueen produce angsty-shouty female sleaze rock with serious dollops of attitude. Unlike many who try the genre, this is genuinely good rock. The four ladies play their music with attitude and have opened for such diverse acts as LA Guns & Mad Capsule. Included is a video for the title track which is a nice slice of sleaze rock, as are the rest of the tracks especially 'Life Support ICU'. Their sound is not that far afield from Slunt. Sure beats listening to most of what qualifies as rock in the UK these days. Getting quite a bit of airplay in the US as well. A full length cannot come too soon. Yet another "catch 'em before they are huge' recommendation is in order.

McQUEEN- 'RUNNING OUT OF THINGS TO SAY' CD SINGLE
Furry Tongue Records

For some reason I was expecting this band to sound like the SUNDAYS or the SMITHS and I don't know where I would have got that from but it's way off.for one, it's female fronted which I wasn't expecting and secondly, it's very vigorous and way more along the lines of US indie/alternative than UK indie. It's got some serious clout and sometimes reminiscent of HOLE, BABES IN TOYLAND or THE DISTILLERS. Sometimes there's a bit of a NIRVANA, SMASHING PUMPKINS edge, but I gotta say that I was really pleasantly surprised that this was dynamic rather than tormented and angst-ridden. it's funny that I was so off-track.

McQueen – Running Out of Things To Say
Label: Furry Tongue Records
Release Date: Early October 2005

Review from:

Reviewed Aug 31, 2005 - Gary Lancaster

Female fronted punk is not as uncommon as you'd think these days... but let's not beat around the bush. We're not talking punk Avril Lavigne, or dare I say it Kelly Clarkson... and we're certainly not talking Kittie here. What's a good comparison?

Deadline? Deadline, for example, and specifically for those in the know has a matured punk rock sound which is only accentuated by the addition of a female lead.

McQueen, on the other hand take this one step further and actually have a full rosta of females, in the form of Leah Duors on vocals, Hayley Cramer on drums, Cat De Casanove on guitars and Sophie Taylor on bass.

A nitty gritty blend of hard rock and punk rock roots make this sound not only as good as some of their male contempories, but probably even better. Leah's voice creates a rusty, filthy almost Courtney Love-esque feeling which sits perfectly with the catchy basslines sandwiched between simple yet affective hooks.

Not your average run of the mill female punk band, and brings back memories of early Hole recordings. It's grunge enfused, and it's down right sexy. This is the impression i've got from their first single, "Running out of things to say", so bring on the album, if it's anything like this it's going to be exciting.

McQueen – Running Out of Things To Say
Label: Furry Tongue Records
Release Date: Early October 2005

Review from:

Females and heavy rock, it’s fair to say, don’t always go hand in hand. Lavigne sticks to her commercial foundations, Kelly Osbourne…erm, Kelly Clarkson’s recently had a go, but real rock, raw and loud, doesn’t suit most female artists even if they claim their music to be just that.

Until now. With the Americans failing, Brighton-based McQueen’s new single simply radiates noise and discontent. ‘Running Out of Things To Say’ explodes after a drum intro with a disco-like riff, into a stop start, quiet loud verse. The chorus, still as powerful as the rest of the song, is now brilliantly catchy, helped by the backing harmonies and sweeping chord changes. McQueen are blessed, too, with the throaty, slutty vocals of Leah Dours, the extra ingredient needed to pull off the dirty rock sound, and the perfect front for any female rock band.
Life Support ICU is a bit more angst-driven, with Dours’ threatening vocals spilling over into the chorus, again embellished by the addition of a clever backing vocal. Slightly more dissonant in the verses, Life Support ICU is nevertheless as decent as the A-side here. There is a high quality to McQueen’s finely tuned snarling rock sound, and they appear ready to take on the rest of the world as the best British female rock band. Hilary Clinton, Operah Winfrey, Condalezza Rice, Madonna. Can you hear me, Madge? Your girls are gonna take one hell of a beating.

Holy shit! ANOTHER good girl-band, that’s like two this lifetime! OK, I don’t mean to sound sexist- I am well aware that it’s not an in-built ability that’s resulted in the biggest bands in the world (and even the supposedly equal-op punk scene) being predominantly all-male.

I just think my fragile mind has been perhaps permanently scarred by The Donnas and (shudder) Tuuli… McQueen, are different though. It’s like Brody Dalle of The Distillers fronting Alkaline Trio and covering late 80s/early 90s L.A. punk… excuse me while I change my shorts. There’s woh-oh’s, gritty vocals, solos of the right length and catchy choruses. Better than all that though is that McQueen put their own spin on the well-worn street-punk formula, giving it a much needed brush off and a darker edge without losing any of the fist-in-the-air attitude we all secretly love it for.
So what have we learned? Shame on me basically- put these guys on a tour with Sahara Hotnights and we may have a very sexy revolution on our hands.

MCQUEEN - RUNNING OUT OF THINGS TO SAY - Review

Girl Power!!! Well not quite girl power but girl power chords are certainly in abundance in this 2 track single from Brighton based female four-piece, McQueen. Similar style of Hole and reminiscent of Tia Carrere this band know how to write winning punk rock songs with a pop edge. And unlike Hole McQueen don't need a big strong man to help them write an album. Oohhh Controversial!

First song "Running out of things to say" has an exceptionally catchy chorus with great searing backing vocals enhancing the voice of lead singer Leah Duors. A great single.

The verse of second song "Life Support ICU" sounds a little like the punk version of Thrash Metallers Kittie, if that makes any sense at all. However another catchy chorus sees them inching closer and closer to securing the crown of Queens of female punk rock, or should that be Mcqueens.
